2011 Meeting
In 1991, a meeting was called and jointly sponsored by the Black Caucus of APHA, the American College of Epidemiology (ACE), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to assess the underlying causes of health status and the differentials causing health disparities – is it due to race or racism?
From that meeting, a group of primarily African-Americans decided to focus on health disparities as an issue and proceeded to carry out a number of analyses, focused on the true etiologic factors for health disparities. Over the next four years, a number of papers were published and one organization was formed to carry on this work: the Society for the Analysis for African American Public Health Issues (SAAPHI).
SAAPHI, an affiliate of the American Public Health Association (APHA), is a non-profit (501c3) national public health organization comprised of researchers, physician and health advocates dedicated to improving the overall health of African-Americans. The organization promotes and utilizes research to inform scientific knowledge, program development and policy decisions. SAAPHI’s mission includes the following goals:
• To initiate and assist in the improvement, development, maintenance and utilization of appropriate databases for the understanding of health problems and needs of African American communities.
• To promote the utilization of scientific information on African Americans in program and policy decisions.
• To formulate and advocate appropriate public policies for health promotion and disease prevention among African Americans.
• To facilitate professional development, social welfare and leadership skills among its members.
For more than a decade, SAAPHI has held scientific meetings in conjunction with APHA. These pre-convention meetings have focused on:
• Eliminating health disparities in African Americans (2000)
• Global progress in eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities (2001)
• Public health implications of obesity in African Americans (2002)
• Improving data quality: from collection to interpretation to action (2003)
• Workforce development of African Americans in public health and research planning (2006)
• Translating science into real world clinical practices and the community (2007)
• Weaving diversity education into kinesiology curriculum (2008)
• Water and public health (2009)
• Critical Race Theory and Emancipatory Public Health: Moving Towards Social Justice (2010)
• Theory of Dimensionality: Conceptualizing Equity in Health and Health Care (2011)
