Our Mission

A research-focused national public health organization, SAAPHI is dedicated to improving the overall health of African Americans through the following goals:

  • To initiate and assist in the improvement, development, maintenance and utilization of appropriate databases for the understanding of health problems and needs of African American communities.

  • To promote the utilization of scientific information on African Americans in program and policy decisions.

  • To formulate and advocate appropriate public policies for health promotion and disease prevention among African Americans.

  • To facilitate professional development, social welfare and leadership skills among its members.

Organization Profile

Each year SAAPHI has held scientific meetings in conjunction with the American Public Health Association (APHA). These pre-convention meetings, which are often coordinated with the Black Caucus of Health Workers of APHA, have had as their focus:

  • HIV, exercise and STDs (2006);
  • a research agenda for improving the health of black women;
  • racism and health; and
  • violence.

Workshops on federal data for research on black women, measuring issues of racism/sexism in black women's health research, and tips on publishing/data analyses have also been part of previous meetings.
