Five long months have passed since the Grand Final, but the NRL is back, back, back, and there's no better way to start the 2024 season than Roosters vs Broncos from Las Vegas, baby. Hollywood Aussies Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman have been in town all week to promote what promises to be a fascinating contest.

The Roosters had a mixed 2023 season but came good when it mattered to reach the finals, falling in the semis to the Storm. They'll be determined to start strongly this time around and go deeper into the post-season. Powerhouse forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Dom Young, a new recruit from Newcastle Knights in England, are both injured but Siua Wong, Victor Radley and Sitili Tupouniua represent a strong back row.

The NRL have made plenty of mileage from Broncos fullback Reece Walsh this week. The easy-on-the-eye star has traded passes with NFL icon Tom Brady to bring a bit of glitz to NRL Las Vegas 2024, as the sport tries to crack America. Having won the Pre-Season Challenge tournament, the Broncos seem to have overcome the disappointment of losing the 2023 Grand Final and will trust in their young players as Deine Mariner gets the nod on the wing. Walsh starts at fullback.

The Roosters and Broncos renew their rivalry on the neutral ground of Las Vegas as the two heavyweight clubs collide on Sunday afternoon AEDT.

It’s been the Roosters who have enjoyed the bulk of recent success against the Broncos, winning five of the last seven meetings, but Brisbane were dominant 32-10 victors when the teams last faced off in July 2023.

While they finished the season strongly to qualify for the finals and bow out in a tight game to the Storm, it was a disappointing campaign for the Roosters – they were extremely inconsistent and injuries to key players also didn’t help.

There’s still a lot of question marks surrounding the Roosters halves – Luke Keary seems well past his best, while Sam Walker has struggled with the pressure and expectation of being the No. 7 to carry the Chooks for the next decade.

Meanwhile, the Broncos were tremendous last season, advancing all the way to the Grand Final before stumbling in the last 20 minutes as a Nathan Cleary masterclass led the Panthers to a miraculous comeback victory.

I’m expecting Brisbane’s young team to learn from that night and come out firing again this season in a bid to go one step further.

Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam are two of the most electrifying young players in the competition and will be out to light up Allegiant Stadium, while Adam Reynolds is the perfect veteran to guide the team around in the halves.

Selwyn Cobbo has shifted to the centres in a bid to get his hands on the ball more, while Corey Jensen starts at prop after the departure of Tom Flegler.

Spencer Leniu will make his competitive debut for the Roosters after joining from premiers Penrith, but fellow new recruit Dominic Young misses out through injury, with Joseph Suaalii going to the wing and Billy Smith lining up at centre.

I like the Broncos here. Walsh, Mam and Cobbo have the potential to light up Vegas and Reynolds can keep the team grounded as he steers the ship. Patty Carrigan and Payne Haas will provide the platform going forward.

The Roosters were disappointing for the bulk of last season and I’m not sure Keary and Walker have enough points in them to hang with the attacking prowess of the Broncos. Roosters have also been traditionally slow starters lately, so backing the Broncos to kick off their season in style (Best Broncos win H2H odds $1.60 with Dabble.)
